The Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers (ANSUT) stands in solidarity with the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) as they begin an unprecedented lockout initiated by the Dalhousie Board of Governors. This employer-driven labour disruption, the first of its kind among Canada’s leading research universities, will undermine Dalhousie University’s academic mission and threaten the quality of education and research in Nova Scotia.
Faculty are asking for fair wages that keep pace with the rising cost of living, job security for academic staff, and working conditions that allow them to deliver the high-quality teaching, research, and service on which Dalhousie students rely.
Walking away from conciliation and forcing a lockout shows Dalhousie administration’s complete disregard for students, faculty, and the collective bargaining process. The lockout will jeopardize the start of the fall semester and delay vital research and teaching activities.
ANSUT calls on the Dalhousie Board of Governors to end this reckless course of action and return to good-faith negotiations with the DFA. Nova Scotia students and communities deserve stable, well-supported universities where faculty can focus on education and research—not fight for respect at the bargaining table.
We urge all faculty, students, labour unions, and community members across Nova Scotia to stand with the DFA in this critical moment.
