HALIFAX, NS – June 25, 2025 – The Atlantic School of Theology Faculty Association (ASTFA) could be on strike as early as July 1, cancelling classes and librarian services.

In a letter addressed to the Board of Governors of the Atlantic School of Theology dated June 13, 2025, ASTFA stated that the decision was a “direct result of the persistent and significant decline in faculty compensation relative to our peers, cost of living, and inflation.” ASTFA asserts that faculty and professional librarians have disproportionately borne the financial burden of the institution’s long-standing financial challenges.

Meanwhile, the Board continues to approve increases to administrative salaries.

“This strike is not simply a matter of compensation,” said ASTFA. “It is a demand for AST to recommit to core institutional priorities, and to realign money with mission. Members are no longer willing to have our livelihoods eroded while the school we love to serve steadily crumbles around us.”

A final conciliation session is scheduled for June 30.

ASTFA emphasized that a fair and equitable collective agreement would demonstrate the Board’s commitment to responsible governance and a renewed dedication to its fundraising mandate. The readiness to strike signifies the members’ rejection of what they describe as an approach where “unjust wages underwrite administrative failure.”
